My Approach
My primary goal is to always be helpful immediately*.
In my initial conversations with you, I’ll offer care, curiosity, and commitment as I learn about your goals, wants, desires, hopes, and anxieties. On my services page, you’ll see descriptions of services I feel most comfortable offering. That said, the list is non-exhaustive and intended only to give a general sense of the shape of our work could take.
After you and I feel I can be helpful, together we’ll determine a “workable problem or opportunity” and the right “adaptive move” in response. An “adaptive move” is an action designed to immediately improve the situation and, generate data for the next move. A move could be anything from meeting with stakeholders to planning a workshop series to planning an organizational wide discovery meeting.
After an adaptive move, we reflect, asking ourselves, “Was that helpful?” “What would be the most helpful thing to do next?” and determine the next adaptive move. This cycle continues until we decide to conclude our engagement.
A quick word about expertise: I am not an expert on you, your team, or organization.
Here’s where my expertise lies:
My ability co-create and facilitate opportunities for your team and organization to have the conversations you need and want to have;
My experience of, and sense of, interpersonal, group, and organizational processes, which help me help you see possible consequences for different kinds of adaptive moves;
In helping individuals develop their capacity to lead;
My capacity to adapt my role and service depending on what will be most helpful to you.
*Much of my approach is informed by Edgar Schein’s writings about helping, consulting, and organizational development, particularly his book on Process Consulting, and his Humble Leadership series.
